what is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Can you tell the difference between the two?
Dehydrated skin is skin that lacks water and is a temporary state of skin type.
It is very important to be aware of this difference, as it will help you to adjust your skincare routine.
Tightness, tingling, dull complexion, lack of suppleness… Dehydration is manifested by a feeling of discomfort, particularly after cleansing or showering.
Dehydration can affect all skin types, whether dry, combination or oily.
While dehydrated skin lacks water, dry skin lacks fat and lipids. If dry skin is often dehydrated, the reverse is not true!
Dehydrated skin feels tight and uncomfortable, but does not show dry patches or flaking. It can also produce too much sebum in an attempt to rebalance itself, and have dilated pores in certain areas. Skin of color is often dehydrated and can even cause more sebum secretion and acne breakout!
How to recognize dehydrated skin: 4 unmistakable signs
You have dehydrated skin if:
- skin feels tight, tingles, without however showing patches of dryness
- skin is uncomfortable after cleansing and when getting out of the shower
- small streaks and fine lines from dehydration
- skin quickly absorbs serum easily
Why is your skin dehydrated ?
Dehydration is due to an alteration of the barrier function of the skin, which can no longer retain water in the tissues. The hydrolipidic film no longer plays its role, which leads to an acceleration of water loss.
Many factors can cause dehydrated skin, including:
- environmental factors (cold, wind, pollution, sun, heating and air conditioning, etc.)
- lifestyle factors (consumption of tobacco and alcohol, insufficient hydration, stress, fatigue, etc.)
- taking certain medications
the use of unsuitable cosmetics (not moisturizing your skin because it is oily, using products that are too harsh or, on the contrary, too rich and formulated for dry skin)
Here a few hydration stars.
There are many natural active ingredients with recognized moisturizing power such as aloe vera, vegetable glycerin, honey, rose or vegetable sugars.
In general, if you concentrate on glycerin and Hyaluronic acid all skin types can stay quite hydrated.
not all hyaluronic acids serums are created equal: There are low, medium, and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid which are combined to increase the action of its TEWL (TRANS-EPIDERMAL_WATER_LOSS) which is to help your skin keep its water content.
